Mangalore, Feb 19: Karnataka Bank organized Founders Day lecture at the Founders’ Day celebration held at the bank’s head office on February 18, Tuesday.
Delivering the Founders Day lecture, Padma Shri Dr Sudha Murty said that Philanthropy needs a compassionate heart, mere finance is not enough. One should have the will to help and must invest one’s wholehearted effort in it. In addition, philanthropy has to proceed on the right path, in the right amount and the right time.
Dr Murty stressed on the role of banks in uplifting the downtrodden in any society. She narrated the sequence of events in which a bank had provided loans to devadasis in Raichur to educate their children, with the objective of helping them to give up their profession and rehabilitating them. Today the whole of Raichur is free of the scrouge of the social evil, she said.
She appreciated the vision of Karnataka Bank and said that it is such banks that lend a helping hand to the poorer sections of society.
Generosity of a few is hope for a million, she opined. The Infosys Foundation, of which she is Chairman, hopes to do much more to provide basic amenities to those who do not have them, she added.
P Jayaram Bhat, MD, welcomed the guests and gathering, while MS Mahabaleshwar Bhat, CGM, proposed the Vote of thanks.
Ananthakrishna, Chairman was also present and promised that the bank would surely do its best to live up to the vision of its Founding Fathers.
