‘Exam pressure’ takes Mangalore boy’s life

19SUICIDEA Class 10 student of Lourdes Central School in Bejai committed suicide in his house in Pinto Lane off Kadri Kambala Road on Tuesday.

Mangalore East Police said, Nihal Shetty (15) was to attend the preparatory tests for Class 10 examinations that were to commence from Wednesday. In a statement to the police, his father Naveen Shetty said his son was depressed over preparations for the tests.

The police said Naveen Shetty and his wife Poornima Shetty left the house for a visit to Polali temple around 1 p.m. When they returned in the evening, they found their son hanging from the roof of the hall where he was studying. The police said the book Nihal was studying was found open. Nihal was taken to a nearby private hospital where he died around 11 p.m.
Shocked

The school authorities and neighbours were shocked to hear about death of Nihal, a boy known for his all-round skills. Nihal was good at one-act plays where he presented bold characters. He was also good in athletics and swimming. His classmates remember Nihal as student who displayed confidence in his interaction with all.

Following the incident, the school management declared a holiday on Wednesday and postponed the preparatory examination.

The police said Nihal was one of the three children of Naveen and Poornima Shetty, a former veteran athlete. Nihal and his younger brother were studying in the same school. Naveen Shetty, who works in Dubai, had come down a few days ago to spend time with the family, the police said.
