Kundapur; Dec 22:  According to the sources with the money, which was approved under Suvarna Gramodhaya Yojane to Herur village panchayat, solar streetlights were installed. Out of seven solar streetlights installed in various places, batteries of four streetlights have been stolen by thieves in the night by breaking the locks of the boxes on the electricity poles. Thieves stole the batteries from Kenji, Mekod, Kallare Ragihaklu, and Madlageri.Total cost of the stolen batteries was Rs 23,000.

A case was registered in Byndoor police station by development officer Girija Veerashekara.

Explaining about the theft, village panchayat president Shreenivasa Poojary and former president Ashok Kumar Shetty said that under this programme, it is mandatory to install solar streetlights. But in our place, since there is monsoon and shade of the trees brightness of the light is not available clearly.Besides, it is very difficult to maintain, if it is installed in desolate areas. In this regard, matter has been brought to the knowledge of the department and requested the authorities to give an opportunity to install electricity lights instead of solar street lights. Since the department has not responded to our request, 20 days ago only, solar street lights have been installed. Now one of our confusion is confirmed. In this context, department has said that it is necessary to assess the stand of department, it said.
