More than two lakh arecanut farmers and five lakh people are indirectly depending on the arecanut farming to earn their living. In such a case, if the government bans arecanut, then farmers will come on streets.

Speaking about the panel of advocates for arecanut growers, DVS said that BJP led state government had formed a panel of advocates to defend arecanut farmers in the state, but the present Congress government has dissolve it and not even formed a new panel.

BJP had supported the gutkha ban since it was harzardous to health, but arecanut do not have any scientific reason to be banned and is also enriched with medicinal qualities. Hence the government must cancel the decision to ban it, he added.
