Sandesha Award winners of 2014 announced

Mangalore, Nov 29: Sandesha Foundation, has been  for the past 22 years honoring personalities has announced its 23rd annual awards for Kannada, Konkani and Tulu literature, art and culture.

The Sandesh Awards were announced at a press meet here on Friday November 29. The awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held on January 15, 2014 at Town Hall.

The award winners as follows:

Vaidehi, renowned writer and winner of Kendra Sahitya Academy award has been chosen for 2014 Sandesha Kannada Literature Award. Vaidehi, a recipient of the Attimabbe award of the government of Karnataka, the writer of several short stories, novels and plays has choosen for Sandesha Konkani literature award.

Cyril G Sequiera, well-known to the literary world as C G S Taccode, the writer of several Tableau’s, comedies, short stories will receive the 2014 Sandesha Konkani Literature Award for for his contribution to Konkani literature.

Lalitha Rai, a great writer of short stories and novels in Tulu, has been chosen for 2014 Sandesha Award for Tulu literature. She has made contribution even to Kannada literature. Karnataka government has honoured her with Tulu Sahitya Academy Award.

B K S Verma, an artist known not only in Karnataka but also abroad, especially for his Geetha-Kuncha, Nrithya-geeta-Kuncha style of drawing, will be honoured with the 2014 Sandesha Art Award.

The Sandesha Media Award will go to B V Rajaram, who, apart from realizing the power of media has toiled ceaselessly in the field of dramatics and has established and fostered the growth of drama training institute, Kalagangotri.

The Sandesha Film Award will be conferred on P Sheshadri, the only film director who beginning with ‘Munnudi’ till the recent ‘Bharat Stores’ has won the National as well as State Best Director Awards for all his seven movies.

Well-known columnist Abdul Rasheed, founder of the popular blog “Kenda Sampige’ will be conferred the 2014 Sandesha Journalism Award. Presently he is the programme coordinator of Akashavani Kendra, Madikeri.

Lawrence Saldanha, a composer based both in Mangalore and Mumbai, will be honoured with the 2014 Sandesha Konkani Music Award. Called the ‘Konkani Keer’, he has worked for Konkani music since his childhood.

The 2014 Sandesha Best Teacher Award will be conferred on Sr Irene Mascarenhas for her selfless service in the field of education. She has served as a teacher and headmistress in schools in Chikmagalur, Thirthahalli, and Balehonnur  She is instrumental  in educating many by establishing schools, preventing school dropouts and paying the fees of the deserving poor children.

White Doves, an NGO established in 1995 dedicated to social service will receive the 2014 Sandesha Special Recognition Award.

Dr Na D’Souza, Fr Mark Valder, Dr Na Damodar Shetty, Sara Abubakker, Chandrakala Nandavar, and Richard Louis were in the jury panel.

Fr Charles Vas, SVD, Joel Pereira and Concepta Fernandes were the jury for Konkani music awards. These Awards were selected under the guidance of Fr Victor Vijay Lobo, director of Sandesha.

Dr Na D’Souza, chairperson, Sandesha Jury, Dr Na Da Shetty, jury member, Roy Castelino, trustee, Sandesha Foundation, Titus Noronha, convener of awards publicity committee, Fr Victor Vijay Lobo, director, Sandesha Foundation and Fr Jayaprakash D’Souza, principal, Sandesha College were present at the press meet.
