Kundapur: Death of fishes in Kotitheertha lake; Rice poisoning suspected

Kundapur; Nov 20: The death of boundless fishes in rows in Koteshwar shree Kotilingeshwar temple’s ‘Kotitheertha’s artificial tank has brought apprehension, panic in the minds of citizens and staff of the temple.

According to locals, since Monday afternoon, until Tuesday afternoon, the death toll of the fishes crossed over 150.

Death due to rice consumption:-

It is said that on Sunday ‘Kodi Habba’was celebrated. Since Sunday morning “Suttakki seva” ritual was also held. The “Suttakki Seve submission” is nothing but spreading of rice around artificial tank built in 4-5 acres of land by the newly married couple.

It was suspected that the rice so spread, might have fallen in the tank in huge quantity and eaten by the fishes, resulting the death of the fishes in a row due to indigestion. Most of the Kaatla and Mashree (Sulafi) types of fishes in the tank are dying and out of these more than 20 fishes of 7-8 kg weight and more than 100 fishes of 1-2 kg weight have been died.

Around 5000 young fishes have been brought from Bhadravati Lakkavalli B.R.Project and put in the tank. Assistant director Ravi from Kundapur fisheries department has come and examined the fishes. It appears to our naked eyes that the death was due to the consumption of white rice. If the death of fishes continues even on Wednesday, fishes will be sent to Mangalore laboratory, it is said.

Prabhakar Shetty, President of Koteshwara Kotilingeshwara temple’s organizing committee, committee members, Rajashekara Shetty, Koteshwara village panchayat president Rajashekar Shetty, development officer Tejappa Kulal, village panchayat co-ordinator Satyanarayana have visited the spot and reviewed the situation.

Under the direction of temple and Panchayat.rickshaw Gopal and natives assisted in the burial process of dead fishes.
