Mangalore,April.04: Speaking to the media persons in the press meet held at NMPT H.O,Panambur today, Dr.P.Tamilvanan-Chairman, New Mangalore Port Trust has told that, New Mangalore Port in the current fiscal 2012-13 handled a record traffic of 37.04 million tonnes of cargo as against 32.94 million tonnes handled in 2011-12 registering the growth of 12.43% over last year. This is the highest qty of traffic ever handled at the Port. The Port has also achieved 2.88% growth over the target fixed the Ministry of Shipping. The growth is due to increase in handling of coal, POL crude & products, coal, maize, containerized cargoes, etc.. The Container traffic consistently increased by 7.55% by handling a record number of 48,409 TEUs as against 45,009 TEUS in previous year. The Railway traffic has grown by 55% by handling 6 million tonnes during the current year as against 3.9 million tonnes handled during previous year, he said.

Financial Highlights– 2012-13
For the 8th consecutive year, the Port Net Surplus is likely to cross Rs.100 crores(Rs.138 crore)
The revised Scale of Rates as approved by TAMP involving 26% reduction in wharfage has been introduced w.e.f. 01-04-2012, resulting in a concession of Rs.52 crores.
Port Trust Board has approved the proposal of creation of General Insurance Fund in respect of Port Assets with an initial corpus of Rs.10 crores.
Developmental Projects:-
Construction of POL berth (Rs.79 crore):- Civil works completed, which has added 7.80 Million Tonnes capacity per annum.
SPM for MRPL:- The facility is expected to be commissioned shortly which will add 18 Million tonnes of additional capacity per annum.
Improvement to Port roads and development of storage yards:- The Port undertook the work of improving the port roads in a phased manner. So far Rs.88.75 crore was spent for roads and storage sheds.
Setting up of facilities for Bulk Cement Terminal by M/s Ambuja Cements Ltd.(Rs.95 crores). The facility is expected to be commissioned shortly.
Construction of new multi-purpose berth(No.18) for handling general cargo and containers:- The work has been approved by the Ministry and work order placed for Detailed engineering & the DPR is in progress.
Port Trust Board approved the const. of 2 addl. Storage sheds inside the port area for storage of foodgrains and fertilizer(20,000 tonnes capacity)
Shipping Movements
The total number of movements carried out during 2012-13 is 2582 .
M.T. JAG LAXMI berthed safely at SPM as trial run on 3-1-2013
Trial berthing successfully carried out at Berth No.13 on 28-3-2013
New Equipments: The following equipments are procured during the year 2012-13
1) 45 T Reach Stacker procured for handling containers
2) 1 No. Forklift Truck
3) Additional High Mast Tower Lights at KK Gate & Wharf area
Business Development
In boosting the Business Promotion Drive, New Mangalore Port in association with FKCCI, Bangalore and other respective Chambers conducted trade promotion meets at Madikeri, Hassan and Shimoga emphasizing the updated developments in the Port to Importers/Exporters and Stakeholders in the hinterland to augment accelerated movement of cargo through New Mangalore Port. This effort yielded positive results and more cargo started moving to the Port particularly from Shimoga(Machinery), Haveri( Liquid Glucose), and coal from Bellary.
Human Resource Development
During the financial year 2012-13, the Port conducted several in-house training programmes for the Officers and employees through NMU/IMU/NITK and Port faculty. 336 officers/staff were imparted training in various subject modules and 242 cargo handling were also trained in safety and material handling during the year to achieve better productivity, safety and quality in cargo handling activities . No major accidents occurred in port operations during 2012-13.

Pollution Control :Being ISO 14001 certified port , the following measures implemented in combating pollution in port areas:-
Tree plantation – 15,000 saplings were planted in the port area during the last one year
Mechanical sprinkling arrangement is made on concrete roads inside port area and other areas under progress
More tankers are deployed to sprinkle water to suppress dust.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
The port is equally committed to involve in social service projects. Following are some of the projects implemented during the year 2012-13:-
Rs.13 lakh to Govt Lady Goschen Hospital, Mangalore for providing well equipped ambulance
Rs. 5 lakh for D.K. District Innovative Fund Action Plan under 13th Finance Commission for establishment of a separate counter and corridor(Namma Padasale) in all taluks of the District.
Contributed Rs.5 lakh to Kodical Mogaveera Maha Sabha®, Meenakaliya, Panambur for providing Non-Colour Gavanised Crimp Sheet roofing for Samudaya Bhavan.
Contributed Rs.5 lakh to Sri Krishna Anganavadi and Rangamandira Renovation Committee, Chitrapura for construction of Rangamandira.
Welfare Measures
The Port is also keen in social welfare activities in and around Mangalore. The following are some of the activities the Port were taken up and implemented in 2012-13:
On the eve of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s 121st birthday, a free medical camp was arranged at Model Hr. Primary School, Kavoor, Mangalore. More than 100 patients ailing from various diseases were examined and free medicines were distributed.
The Port Trust Hospital treated 38,818 patients(38,536 out patients and 282 In-patients) who includes the employees and their families during the Fy 2012-13. In addition to above, 756 patients were treated in various referral and approved hospitals. Treatments to retired employees are continuing.
Pulse Polio immunization was conducted at the PTH on 20-1-2013 and 17-2-2013 for the benefit of all children in the age group of 0 to 5 years in and around port.

Development of LNG Terminal :- The Port has entered into MoU with ONGC, BPCL & Mitsui, Japan for carrying out Feasibility Study.
