World Mental Health Day by KMC and Wenlock Hospitals

Mangalore, Oct. 10: The Department of Psychiatry of KMC and Wenlock District Hospital in association with District Legal Services Authority, Manaswini and Indian Psychiatric Society – Karnataka Chapter observed ‘World Mental Health Day’ at Wenlock hospital here on Oct. 10

The main theme of the programme is “Mental Health and Older Adults”.

The Principal District and Sessions Judge, Dakshina Kannada Advocate Arun Chowdapurkar inaugurate the programme.


Addressing the gathering Chowdapurkar said, mental health is depending on how we think, feel and behave. Mental health can affect your relationship in the family, your daily life and your physical health.

President of Indian Psychiatric Society, Karnataka Chapter and Senior Consultant Psychiatrist Dr K S Madhav Rao in his keynote address said that the mind and body are inseparable. Without mind there is no body and without body there is no mind.

He further said that we are keeping ourselves busy and neglecting our children. We should be the role models to our children where they can follow us. When they do not get love from home, they go out in search of love and get addicted to bad habits. So parents should guide their children when they are young.


Dr Rao also said that the most common forms of mental illnesses are Anxiety disorders, Panic disorder, Phobias, Bipolar disorder and Depression. Lot of people with mental health problems may improve their mental health by alterations in lifestyle, which may include a better diet, exercise and getting enough sleep, all these can bring enormous differences to the mental health of the patient.

Principal Senior Civil Judge and CJM Subramanya J N, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Mangalore Dr H S Shivakumar and Consultant Psychiatrist GWDH Dr Sunil Kumar were also present. Prof and HOD of Psychiatry KMC Mangalore Dr Ravish Thunga welcomed the gathering.
