Principal Fr Alwyn Serrao inaugurates 17th independence cup football tourney at city’s Nehru Maidan

Mangalore, July 20: The month -long independence cup football tournament organized by DK district football association has been inaugurated by Fr Alwyn Serrao, principal of Rosario college of Management on July 20, Saturday at city’s Nehru Maidan

The tournament was inaugurated with the lighting of traditional lamp by Fr Alwyn Serrao accompanied by other dignitaries on the dais.

Govind Pai, Asst.General Manager of the Corporation Bank and A Diwakar, Corporator were present as chief guests.

After the inauguration, Alwyn while speaking to media reporters said in his inaugural address that DKDFA must be complemented for their efforts in organizing this type of month- long football tournament every year and it is not easy to organize a tournament like this.

Besides he also said that people in India love cricket a lot than any other sports but in our city, football is still alive and the credit must mainly go to DKDFA, he said and wished them to continue this fete forever and stressed the need to encourage sports like football through such tournaments so that interest in such sports lives on.

D M Aslam, President DKDFA said in his speech that more than 160 teams would be taking part in the tournament and vie for the top honors and the final will be played on August 15th.

The first match was played between sacred Heart Higher primary school, Kulashekar and SDM Higher primary school, Ujire.

Speaking further to the media reporters he said that Nehru Maidan is being used for various political-religious functions and hence poorly maintained. In order to promote the sport, we are in need of a good turf ground, he added.

D M Aslam, President, DKDFA, Mohammad Hussain Bolar, secretary, Vijaya Suvarna, member, Karnataka state football association and among others were present.
