MANGALORE: The Wednesday’s bus bandh has been postponed following assurances of deputy commissioner N Prakash that the demands of the employees would be looked into threadbare and a solution would be arrived at soon.

A nine-member committee has been formed to look into the demands. The committee members are representatives from the bus union, owners association and from the district administration. They are: Ivan D’Souza, Krishna D Anchan and Suresh Shetty from Dakshina Kannada Karmika Parishat Bus Employees Union; Rajavarma Ballal, Rajaram Chatra and Dinesh Puthran from bus owners and representing the officials will be labour officer, Regional Transport Officer, and deputy commissioner of police. The committee will meet at 11am on Wednesday to discuss the issue.

Ivan D’Souza said: ”Based on the assurances of the DC, we have postponed the bandh.”

Earlier, Ivan said: ”Our main demands are job security, abolition of contract system of running the buses and payment of ESI and PF facilities to the employees.” He claimed that the contract system was giving rise to numerous accidents as at the end of the day, the conductor and driver have to give the owner a certain amount. And to make it up, the buses are run in a rash and negligent way, skipping timings and endangering people’s lives, he alleged.
