Mangaluru, July 25: Some land has been eroded by the tides and coconut trees have collapsed due to sea erosion at Uchila near here, on Friday July 24th.

The land belonging to Vasant and Yamuna residing at New Uchila and also about ten coconut trees belonging to them were washed away by the high tides. Six coconut trees belonging to Vasant and four belonging to Yamuna collapsed down due to the waves.

A senior citizen in the locality, said that since a long time her family has been living there. Three fourths of their land has already been eroded by the sea. We are unable to buy land elsewhere and build a house for ourselves. I hope that people’s representatives understand our grievances and get a government site sanctioned to us in another place, she said.

Vasant said that the visit by people’s representatives does not mean anything, as the government does not respond to the problems of distressed people even after these visits. The compensation given from the concerned department is insufficient to meet the repair costs of the house. As a temporary measure, the boulders can be heaped to stop the waves, else we will be driven to streets, he said.
