Nine trucks seized for transporting sand illegally

Mangaluru, July 23: It is reported that nine trucks which were transporting sand illegally was seized by the officials of Mines and Geology Department, at two different places near Mangaluru on July 22nd.

Officials have seized four trucks from near Hoigebazar here.

The trucks were parked to get the sand loaded from the river banks. The seized trucks have been handed over to the jurisdictional police. Five sand­ laden trucks were seized near Addur on the banks of river Phalguni (Gurupura). The officials handed over the trucks to the jurisdictional Bajpe police, and released them  after collecting penalty of Rs. 60,000, informed the officials.

In the raid team, Senior geologist Nagendrappa, officials including Somashekhara Murthy, Mahadevappa and driver Channappa had participated.

The district administration has banned extraction of sand from river banks in the coastal regulation zone area during the monsoon — June to August.

Construction works are affected due to unavailability of sand in the district.
