33rd annual convocation of Mangalore University held at Mangalagangothri; Allcargo’s Founder & Chairman Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty Awarded “Honorary Doctorate”

Mangaluru, June 17: The thirty third annual convocation of Mangalore University was held at Mangala Auditorium, Mangalagangothri here on Wednesday, June 17th.

Governor of Karnataka and chancellor of Mangalore University Vajubhai Rudrabhai Vala presided over the ceremony.

On this occasion, Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala conferred the honorary doctorates on three eminent personalities – Prof Goverdhan Mehta, Shashi Kiran Shetty and Prof B V Chowdari.

Allcargo’s Founder & Chairman Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty Awarded “Honorary Doctorate” by Mangalore University

The Founder and Chairman of Allcargo Logistics Ltd, Mr. Shashi Kiran Shetty has been awarded an “Honorary Doctorate” at the 33rd annual convocation by Mangalore University yesterday.

Mr. Shetty received this honor for his immense contribution in the field of healthcare to the underprivileged in Mangalore through the Avashya Foundation. The Foundation also undertakes social welfare schemes encompassing national disaster relief, health care, education, sports, women empowerment and environment sustainability in India.

Spanning a marvelous career of over four decades, Mr Shetty is the pioneer and a visionary who has taken India’s logistics industry on a global scale. Former director of IISc, Bengaluru Goverdhan Mehta and educationist B V R Chowdari of Singapore also received the honorary doctorate degrees at the convocation.

This adds another “prestigious” feather to his cap after being conferred with the “Distinction of Commander of the Order of Leopold II” by the Royalty of Belgium early this year in February.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Shetty said: “As alumni of this esteemed university, it is a great privilege to receive honorary degree from the institute that has since 1980 contributed to all aspects of education. I would like to dedicate this award to my family, friends and mentors who have guided me through these years. Their support was very important for me to achieve this award”.

Professor Govardhan Mehta, former director, Indian Institute of Science, Bangaluru, and national research professor, School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad was present as the chief guest and delivered the convocation address.

Prof Govardhan said, it is indicated in a recent study that success in life is determined only twenty percent by domain knowledge. The rest comes from attitudes, aspirations and soft skills. I suppose that the university has provided opportunities for the students to create better balance between disciplinary learning and soft skills, particularly those essential for advancement in profession, he said.

Professor K Byrapapa, vice chancellor of Mangalore University presented a brief report on the academic performance and activities of the university.

A total of 88 Doctor of philosophy degrees were awarded including 11 in Arts, 63 in Science, 9 in Commerce and 5 in education streams, while a total of 37 gold medals and 63 cash prizes were also awarded to the candidates during the convocation ceremony.
