Mangaluru, April 29: A meeting with the principals of various colleges on preventive measures to be taken about the student’s safety, and mainly against sexual harassment of female students in the college was organised on Tuesday April 28th at police auditorium here.
Principals and conveners (protection of women and children) of all colleges in Dakshina Kannada district attended the meeting.
The meeting was presided over by DK district superintendent of police, Dr SD Sharanappa.
Gertrude Veigas, assistant director in women and child welfare department of the district, speaking on the occasion said, appropriate measures has to be taken to prevent sexual harassment of women. A circular has also been sent to the colleges in this regard, she said.
She also informed that a number of provisions like holding meetings to stop atrocities on children, maintaining register in the front guard, formation of anti ragging committees with police personnel as members, formation of committee to work against illegal sale and consumption of drugs inside premises of college, formation of committees to provide personal counselling for students, formation of committees to stop sexual harassment and other problems faced by female employees and students, and construction of compound walls, and have to be followed mandatorily.
Principals of different colleges of the district who were present at the meeting informed that they have followed all the guidelines. The principals of government colleges complained about the shortage of manpower to recruit security guards and lack of grant to install CCTV cameras. Rest of the guidelines have been implemented, they said.
Dr S D Sharanappa said, in our state many incidents of atrocities on women have come to light. In this regard, the state government has formed strict rules and regulations to check such incidents in future.
Under POCSO Act there are provisions of severe action against the educational institutions too. Hence, the educational institutions have to take strict measures to prevent such incidents by implementing the guidelines given by the government. All educational institutions ought to form child safety committee, he said.
DC AB Ibrahim said, obtaining good result in exams is not enough, but being good citizen of this country is also utmost important. The educational institutions should conduct social profile and background verification of all the staffs, he said.
