Undertrial develops high fever, dies

MANGALORE: A 43-year-old undertrial, who was ill since June 1 has died at Mangalore sub-jail on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased Naveen Poojary, son of Rajeev Poojary, is a resident of Ashraya Colony in Kumpala.

K Dodda Kamaiah, superintend of the jail, told TOI that Naveen was arrested on May 20, by Ullal police near the bridge at Thokottu for roaming around suspiciously. Police booked a case under Section 96 of Karnataka Police Act (being found under suspicious circumstances between sunset and sunrise armed with dangerous instrument with intent to commit an offence).

Naveen who had fever was taken to Government Wenlock Hospital for treatment on June 1. He returned to the jail the same day. He had been on medication since June 1, said police.

“On June 4, Naveen was rushed to the hospital again as he had high fever. Doctors declared him bought dead around 1.45pm,” said Dodda.

Naveen was under judicial custody and was produced in the court on June 3. His next hearing was on June 14.

The reason for the death has not yet been confirmed, as the postmortem report is awaited. A case has been registered at Barke police station.
