Surgical team at AJ Hospital detach a large tumor from the heart of 3-year old child.

Mangaluru, December 5: A large rare tumour was successfully isolated from the heart of a 3-year-old by the paediatric cardiac surgery team at AJ Hospital & Research Center.

Shakila, a 3-year-old child from Puttur was suffering from severe breathlessness. She was evaluated by Dr Prem Alva, consultant interventional paediatric cardiologist and diagnosed to have a tumour in the heart.

She was operated by the paediatric cardiac surgery team. Dr Gourav Shetty, consultant congenital and paediatric cardiac surgeon said the tumour was filling the right ventricle and blocking the outflow of blood to the lungs.

This is a rare cardiac tumour, which forms 5% of all cardiac tumours.

The child has recovered completely and is discharged from the hospital.
