Mangalore, October 13: On Monday October 13th, the International Day for Disaster Management; the District Disaster Response Team (DDRT) was launched at a ceremony held at the Conference Hall in SDM College of Business Management at Mangalore.
The programme was organised under the collaboration of the DK Branch of Indian Red Cross Society and Youth Red Cross Units of SDM Law College and SDM Business Management College.
DDRT is a group of volunteers who are ready to serve during disasters and natural calamities will also conduct mock drills and educate students and the laymen on the disaster management techniques.
Additional DC B Sadashiva Prabhu, inaugurated the DDRT while the Disaster Response Tools were launched by HS Varadarajan, Chief Fire Officer of the district.
Addressing the gathering, Varadarajan said, with the launch of the Disaster Response Team a longawaited demand has been fulfilled and assured all help to it from the Fire Services Department.
Additional DC Sadashiva Prabhu in his address laid emphasis on the need to educate the public on the way to tackle disasters. He further stated that the District Administration would lend all possible aid to the DDRT in their efforts.
During this gathering, Deputy Commandant of Home Guards -V Purushottam, Prabhaker Shriyan, Chairman of Indian Red Cross Society, Nodal officer of Youth Red Cross unit – Vinutha Rai, and others were present.
DDRT will encompass members from Red Cross Society, Departments such as Police, Fire, Port, Railway, Revenue, MCC, Zilla Panchayat, Airport, Home Guards and other organisations interested in social service.
