Police are investigating a “racist” attack after a group of women allegedly ripped off a Muslim woman’s hijab as she was on her way to collect her children from school.

Three women allegedly attacked the mum “for wearing a headscarf” as she walked to an Islamic primary school in the south of London.

The incident occurred after the women allegedly asked if she was hot wearing the headscarf as she went to collect her two young children. The women then allegedly started “shouting and hurling abuse”.

According to the Evening Standard, the suspects allegedly pulled the hijab off the woman and punched her.

The woman was left with whiplash and chucks of hair missing from the attack, but did not suffer significant physical harm. The London Ambulance Service was not called.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson told The Independent: “Officers attended and identified a 25-year-old victim who had been assaulted, before a member of the public stepped in to stop the attack.

“She did not require hospital treatment and LAS were not called.

“Two suspects were identified and arrested on suspicion of common assault and a racially aggravated offence cont. Section 5 Public Order Act 1986; both were women, one aged 35 the other aged 18.

“The two women arrested were taken into custody at a south London police station where they were later bailed to return to a date in July pending further enquiries.

“Officers from Croydon Borough continue to investigate.”
