40-year-old man was picked up from his hometown in Bihar after Cuffe Parade resident lodged complaint against unknown man for harassing her on the cellphone

A 40-year-old Bihari man is cooling his heels in the lock-up after police arrested him for stalking a 32-year-old south Mumbai woman on her mobile phone. Police said the accused, identified as Suresh Ramchandra Mangal, would randomly call mobile numbers and if a woman answered the call, he would start harassing them.

According to the police, a 32-year-old Cuffe Parade resident had approached them and filed a complaint against an unidentified man who would call her up and annoy her on the phone. “The accused had called up the victim more than four times and harassed her, after which she decided to lodge a complaint.

After we tracked the location of his phone, a police team was dispatched to Bihar and the accused was arrested on Monday morning,” said Senior Police Inspector Sharad Barde from Cuffe Parade police station. During interrogations, Mangal told the cops that a Delhi-based businessman had given him the number and asked him to call the woman up.

“Apart from this disclosure, he has not uttered a word. We are trying to ascertain who the businessman is, and how he got the complainant’s number. We have got custody of the accused and are investigating if he carried out similar transgressions on other people.” The accused has been booked under section 354 D (stalking) of the IPC.

Pesky caller
The complainant told cops that Mangal, in the first call to her, told her that he loves her and asked for her hand in marriage. He also asked if she would accompany him for a movie. Angered with his conduct, the woman reprimanded him and ordered him not to call her number again. But despite the censure he continued to call her, after which she approached the cops.
