A policewoman was gangraped by three armed men on National Highway 75 in Latehar district early on Friday morning. The victim, in her twenties, was on her way to her relative’s house with the body of her brother-in-law who had been killed in Ranchi on August 20. Latehar police said they have detained a few suspects but no arrests have been made so far.

The victim had left Ranchi late on Thursday night with her parents, daughter, in-laws and the body of her brother-in-law who had been shot at by unknown assailants on August 20. The family was on her way from Ranchi to her relatives’ village in Garhwa district when their vehicle was stopped, along with others, near Jagladga bridge on NH-75 by armed robbers. Three armed men allegedly stopped several vehicles and looted valuables from the passengers near Jagladga bridge and pulled the policewoman out of the vehicle and gangraped her.

The victim had been appointed in the district police department on compassionate grounds a year back after her husband, a policeman, was killed in Maoist violence.

“A medical examination has been done, a FIR was registered, and our investigations are on. We have detained a few people for questioning. No arrests have been made yet,” said Latehar’s Superintendent of Police Michael S. Raj.
