Earthquake measuring 6.8 jolts Pak, tremors felt across north India

The epicentre of earthquake is in Hindukush mountain range, says National Centre for Seismology.

Islamabad: A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake on Sunday jolted many parts of Pakistan including PoK, forcing people to flee their homes.

The duration of the quake was around 10-15 seconds. The epicentre of the quake was in the border region of Afghanistan and Tajikistan in the Hindu Kush mountains having a depth of 236 kilometres.

The tremor was felt in Khyber-Pakhtuknkhwa and Punjab province as well as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Gilgit- Baltistan regions. So far there is no report of any loss to property and human life.

According to J L Gautam, Operations Head of National Centre for Seismology, “The earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale at a depth of 190 km hit Hindukush mountain region at 3:58 pm.” There were no immediate reports of any casualty.

In north India, tremors were felt in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh and Haryana, besides Delhi. Delhi Metro services were also halted for few minutes.
