New Delhi: The government’s decision to continue with Madhya Pradesh Governor Ram Naresh Yadav, who was appointed during the UPA’s tenure, has tied up the saffronites in knots. The BJP found itself in a mess when a television news channel revealed that the Governor was named as “accused number 10” in the Vyapam scam by the Madhya Pradesh police.
Only a few days back, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had claimed “no big fish” was being protected by the state administration. While the BJP claimed that the Governor’s constitutional immunity gave him protection, the Congress pointed out that others named in the same FIR were now in jail. The credibility of the state’s STF is also being questioned.
After the BJP came to power at the Centre over a year ago, it has removed virtually all Governors appointed by the UPA. Mr Yadav, however, managed to escape the axe and continues to remain at the Bhopal Raj Bhavan.
One of the accused in the scam, Veerpal Singh, had alleged in an FIR that he had handed over Rs 3 lakh to the Governor’s son, Shailesh Yadav, for nearly 10 students who intended to cheat in the qualifying examinations for government teachers. The transaction allegedly took place at the Governor’s official residence.
