17 armymen were killed in an ambush in Manipur’s Chandel district this morning. 12 others were injured in the attack, which is suspected to have been carried out by an unidentified militant group, police said.

The 6 Dogra convoy, which was headed to Imphal from Motul, was ambushed around 8.30 am. Manipur Home Secretary J Suresh Babu said that rocket propeller grenades (RPGs) were used to attack the convoy.

Security agencies suspect Naga group NSCN(K) or the United National Liberation Front of Manipur, or UNLF, to be behind the attack.
Chandel saw a shutdown yesterday over the killing of a woman allegedly by the troops of Assam rifles.
