Chennai, May 13: A 30-year-old nurse was arrested in Chennai on Tuesday for allegedly selling a newborn baby of a couple.
Police said a couple from Avadi – Karthikeyan and his pregnant wife Sangeetha – went to a maternity home at Thiruvottiyur on Sunday for delivery. Jayanthi, a nurse working at the clinic, told them that there were no proper facilities there and took them to another hospital in the locality, where Sangeetha delivered a baby.
Later, Jayanthi told the couple that Sangeetha had given birth to a stillborn baby. She even showed them the body of a baby.
However, Sangeetha’s parents raised suspicion as the baby appeared dark unlike the couple. They lodged a complaint with police.
Jayanthi confessed to have sold the baby to one Bhuvaneshwari of Avadi for a sum of Rs 1 lakh.
Police are investigating.
