Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said the Ram temple issue cannot be resolved by passing a law in Parliament as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lacks a majority in the Rajya Sabha.
“The BJP does not have a majority in Rajya Sabha, so this time it is not possible to bring motion in the Parliament to make a law for the construction of Ram temple,” the senior BJP leader said.
“The honourable high court has given its verdict on the Ayodhya dispute. The matter is pending at the Supreme Court. All of us should wait for the verdict of the Supreme Court,” he added.
When asked if the BJP would bring the motion for a Ram temple if it got a majority in Rajya Sabha in the days to come, Singh said, “It is a hypothetical question.”
The ruling party has 45 members in the Upper House and it is unlikely that it will have the numbers during its current tenure. In the House of 243 members, the opposition has at least 132 MPs.
Reacting to a question on underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, Singh said he would speak “something on Dawood in a day or two.”
Singh was in Ayodhya on Sunday to attend a function of the Deen Bandhu Netra Chikitsalaya, an eye hospital jointly run by‘Kalyanam Karoti’ trust of Lucknow and Mani Ram Das Chawani Seva Trust (Ayodhya) headed by Mahant Nritya Gopal Das, president of the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas.
The home minister performed ‘bhoomi poojan’ with Mahant Nritya Gopal Das and laid the foundation of the outpatient department (OPD) and doctors’ residences at an eye hospital here.
Addressing the gathering, Singh said politicians should consider working for the society in the spirit of service their first religion.
Rajnath Singh also visited Hanuman Garhi and Ram Janmabhoomi and paid obeisance.
