Mumbai, April 25: Failing to conceive or adopt a child, a 39-year-old woman kidnapped a baby girl asleep with her family at CST’s main concourse on Thursday night.

Kalpana Parmar had been tying pieces of cloth around her tummy for sometime to pretend that she was pregnant. So her neighbours did not suspect anything when she brought the kidnapped infant home and threw a party for her delivery. However, the cabbie, who had ferried her home from CST, brought the cops to her doorstep on Friday.

“Parmar had not planned the abduction. She was desperate for a child and could not resist the temptation on noticing Ariza asleep with her family,” said GRP commissioner Madhukar Pandey. Parmar was captured on CCTVs picking up the child but her face could not be seen clearly.

Ariza is the younger daughter of decorator, Abdul Karim. On Thursday, Karim, who lives in Kalyan, was headed to his hometown in Hyderabad, with his family, to visit an ailing relative. When he could not cough up sufficient money for a ticket, he decided to spend the night at the concourse with his wife and two daughters. Ariza had vanished when he woke up at 7am on Friday.

“We were in tears and thought we would never see Ariza again,” he told TOI. The CST GRP was informed and CCTV footage was checked.

Sleuths tapped their informants and made inquiries with cabbies plying at the terminus.

One cabbie, Swami Shukla, recollected having dropped a woman with a baby at Maharashtra Nagar in Mankhurd around 5am.

“The woman was speaking to someone on the phone. I later led the cops to her colony,” said Shukla. But Maharashtra Nagar has over 1,100 houses.

The cops formed teams and started to quiz residents if any woman had recently delivered a baby.

“Parmar had lied to her husband and neighbours that she had given birth to a male child. Her husband, who works in a private company, was overjoyed. Parmar used to visit orphanages to adopt a child but had been turned away,” said an official. “We are looking for her accomplice,” he said.
