Chennai: Two schoolgirls were crushed to death after a nine-feet wall — reportedly constructed nearly four decades ago — collapsed inside their campus in Chennai city on Monday afternoon.

Police said the wall collapsed at Avvai Home TVR Girls Higher Secondary School at Oorur Kuppam in Besant Nagar around 12.30 pm, during the lunch hour. According to police officials, the accident took place when three students — K Menaka (12) and M Nandini (12) and S Sathya (12) — were playing with their classmates near the wall.

While Menaka and Nandini died on the spot, injured Sathya was admitted to a private hospital. As soon as the wall collapsed, other students raised an alarm, after which the teachers alerted the fire brigade and rescue personnel. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Government Royapettah Hospital in the city.

Senior education department officials who inspected the accident spot said some portions of the school were unsafe and the school has been running for nearly 40 years. The state government announced Rs 3 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
