At least 20 passengers were killed and another 15 injured Tuesday when a bus plunged into a river in Khed area on the Mumbai-Goa highway near here, officials said.

The accident took place around 3.50 am when the Goa-Mumbai bus belonging to Mahakali Travels suddenly lost control on the Bharna bridge over Jagbudi river, 190 km from Maharashtra’s capital Mumbai, and crashed into the river, said B L Shinde, an official from the highway department.

“So far, 20 bodies have been removed from the site and there are some more injured passengers. The casualty figures may increase,” Shinde said. The injured, among them the bus driver have been taken to hospitals in Khed and Chiplun.

Residents in Khed have blamed human error for the accident but the cause has yet to be determined.
