New Delhi: A day after exit polls predicted a comfortable win for his party, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal watched a film, spent time with the family and happily posed for selfies with supporters, flashing the victory sign.
Tipped to be the next Delhi chief minister, Kejriwal, a movie buff, walked the talk on Sunday as he along with several party colleagues and family members caught the evening show of the latest Akshay Kumar action-thriller, Baby, at a multiplex close to his home in Kausambi, Ghaziabad.
“Volunteers. U did an amazing job. Relax for 2 days. Spend wid ur family. Sleep. Watch movies. Meditate. Chill. God bless u,” the AAP chief, who kept a punishing schedule for almost three months in the run-up to the polls, had tweeted earlier in the day.
Kumar Vishvas, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh joined Kejriwal for the show after which people lined up to get pictures clicked with the AAP chief.
Exit polls have predicted a big win for the AAP in the 70-member Delhi assembly voting for which was held Saturday. Results will be declared Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, AAP leaders, NRI volunteers and relatives dropped in at Kejriwal’s house.
BJP trashes exit polls
Downplaying exit polls predictions of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) running away with the Delhi elections, the BJP maintained it was confident of victory with a comfortable majority.
The party held a review meeting Sunday to assess its position and receive feedback from workers and candidates of all 70 constituencies — including its chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi, Delhi unit chief Satish Upadhyay and organisation in-charge Prabhat Jha.
“We did a micro analysis of all the constituencies and our candidates are confident of winning. We will definitely form the government in Delhi,” said Upadhyay.
Dismissing the exit polls as just a survey, Bedi said, “We need to wait for the results as in some seats, the margin is very small. So, it could swing any way.” But she reiterated that whatever the outcome, she would take responsibility.
On AAP’s movie outing, Bedi remarked, “They will get a lot of time to watch movies now.”
Congress leaders catch up on sleep
After a fortnight-long hectic poll campaign, Congress candidates spent their Sunday with their families.
While some candidates caught on much-needed sleep, some found relaxation in spending time with their children and grandchildren.
Ajay Maken, who led the Congress poll campaign for the Delhi elections, said he had an eight-hour sleep after several days.
“I could barely manage two-three hours sleep a day in the last few days. I had a tension-free sleep on Sunday which helped me relax,” Maken told reporters.
Talking about the possible election results, Maken agreed that the exit polls cannot be dismissed and if the forecast about the party’s performance comes out correct, it will be a matter of concern.
“We cannot dismiss the exit polls. If these turn out to be true, it will be a matter of concern for us,” Maken told reporters.
The exit polls results have predicted doom for the Congress. If these polls are right, the party which could barely manage eight seats in the 2013 polls, may suffer further loss and its seat tally may come down to less than five seats.
A senior party leader, however, said the loss for the Congress is not big. “We were indeed not in contest this time. The electorate had given its decision in 2013 that the Congress should stay out of power for five years. The loss is bigger for the BJP,” said a senior party leader requesting anonymity.
