New Delhi: A top bureaucrat in the Union Home Ministry and a Joint Director in CBI are under the scanner for reportedly having tried to stall the arrest of former Congress minister Matang Sinh in the Saradha scam, a few days ago.

CBI is believed to have sent a report to the Prime Minister’s Office in this regard, sources in the agency said.

Top sources said Home Minister Rajnath Singh has been briefed by officials about reports suggesting that a top ministry official had allegedly attempted to stop the arrest of Sinh who was picked up by CBI in Kolkata on Saturday.

“The Home Minister is seized off the matter and may ask the official to clarify his position,” sources said.

The Home Minister is understood to have indicated that if anyone is found involved in any misdemeanour, action will be taken.

CBI Joint Director (Policy) R S Bhatti, who is in-charge of media relations, did not respond to specific questions in this regard. Later, CBI spokesperson was asked to convey to the media that the matter is under investigation and hence the agency will not comment.

Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said so far there has been nothing concrete against the official and whatever reports appeared in media were only “hearsay”.

“So far, there is nothing concrete, only hearsay. If something comes in substantive, we will take a call accordingly,” Rijiju told reporters here.

When asked about the issue, CBI Director Anil Sinha refused to say anything. “Do I ever talk on such a subject,” Sinha said.
