Ahmedabad: A 22-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh was stabbed to death and her male friend stabbed and beaten up late Wednesday night allegedly after a failed gangrape attempt in a residential neighbourhood of Naranpura in Ahmedabad. The man remains in critical condition following brutal assault by four unidentified youths outside Kapil Kunj society. A throwback to the Delhi’s December 16 gangrape, it was around 10.45 pm when the youths spotted the woman and her friend in the shrubs near the railway tracks and tried to molest her when the man intervened.
According to the police, the woman’s male friend, 25, had come to Ahmedabad from Maharashtra to meet her. Around 10.45 pm on Wednesday, he and the victim were sitting near railway tracks when four unidentified persons attacked them. Police said that the assailants tried to take advantage of the woman who resisted. Following this, the group of men, aged between 25 and 30, stabbed her multiple times while they also stabbed her male friend in his abdomen.
Police said that the man dialed 100 for help. When the police arrived they were taken to civil hospital where the woman succumbed to her injuries while her friend is said to be critical. According to ACB Y J Jadeja, the man’s statement has been taken between bouts of unconsciousness. He said that nothing was clear at this stage. “We only know as of now that both the victims are originally from Gorakhpur, UP, while the girl’s parents live in Veraval,” Jadeja said. When asked whether the duo were engaged, Jadeja said that nothing was clear since their parents were yet to be contacted. He said that the police were waiting for the girl’s funeral before taking her parents’ statements.
The man has said in his statement, recorded by police inspector D R Dhamal, that he was set to get engaged with the woman about nine months ago, but her father didn’t approve of their relationship. The man said he was in touch with the woman over the phone and they met a couple of times. On Wednesday morning, he came to Ahmedabad from Mumbai and checked into a hotel – Govindam – at Shahibaug. At around 10 pm, they met at Riverfront and went to the hotel together.
At 8 pm, the man took the woman to bring her at her hostel at Ankur road in Naranpura. They got down from the auto at Usmanpura garden. The garden was closed so they strolled along the railway tracks near Kapil Kunj Society’s Gate Number 1. According to the man, they sat near a shrub and were talking when the four men came.
The man said that the men wanted to take advantage of the girl. According to him, the assailants stabbed her in her chest, abdomen and hands. He said that when he was trying to prevent the attackers, he was also stabbed in his abdomen. The man said that the attackers were talking in both Hindi and Gujarati and he couldn’t see their faces in the dark. continued…
