The mishap occurred on the outskirts of the village as the elders of the family were busy picking cotton in their field. Rescue operations were in full swing till reports last came in and they had reached a depth of about 30 feet, digging a parallel trench.
The girl was said to be trapped 50 feet into the earth and the borewell actually is some 300 feet deep. Till late in the evening, the rescuers had gone in only about 25 feet and it is expected that they could reach the level at which the little girl was trapped, only in the early hours of Monday.
Soon after the alarm was raised, the Manchal police led by Inspector P. Jagadeeshwar and a 108 ambulance, arrived on the scene. Among the first steps taken were to clear the area of people eager to assist in whatever manner they could and emergency management technicians rolled out oxygen cylinders and began pumping the life-saving gas into the hole.
“I only hope nothing happens to my daughter. I am praying to god and hoping the officials will help me out,” the girl’s father said, in a voice choked with emotion.
