Sharjah: An Asian man involved in a botched robbery of a money exchange centre in Al Shwaihain area in Sharjah was shot while fleeing the scene of the crime, say police.

The incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday, an official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News.

Police officers were dispatched to the scene when the security alarm was triggered in the robbery attempt and a bell began ringing inside the exchange.

The 38-year-old suspect, identified as D.M.S.M., an Afghan, fled the scene as police forces surrounded the location.

In the ensuing chase, police fired two warning rounds of ammunition into the air to persuade the fleeing suspect to give up the chase.

However, when he continued to flee, police fired once again, hitting the suspect in the leg.
After securing the scene, the suspect was rushed to Al Kuwaiti Hospital around 4.30am to receive treatment for the gunshot wound. A police guard remained in the hospital during the treatment.

Police said evidence gathered from the investigation suggested that the suspect was attempting to steal cash stored inside a safe on the premises of the exchange.

According to a Sharjah Police official, the suspect is known to police and has a criminal history dating back to 2010 when he was deported from the country.

The case remains under investigation by officers at Al Gharb police station.
