A housemaid has been sentenced to six months in jail for stealing gold jewellery worth Dh55,000 from her sponsor’s house.

The Sri Lankan maid, 31, has been accused of theft from workplace. The Court of First Instance also ordered that she be deported after serving her time in prison.

The complainant, a 43-year-old Indian businessman, said he found out about the theft on December 12 last year when he called his maid on the phone.

“It was around 11am. Both my wife and I were at work. I called the maid to check on my children. But the maid was not taking my calls,” he said.

His son answered the call and told him the maid had left the flat. “I got suspicious that she might have stolen something from our house. After half an hour I returned home in Al Qusais and I checked our belongings in my bedroom.”

The complainant found his wife’s jewellery missing and he called the police.

A police sergeant said that they arrested the maid on December 16, last year when they spotted her carrying travel bags outside her place in Al Badaa. On searching her baggage, the police found the stolen jewellery. The defendant admitted during the investigation that she stole gold jewellery belonging to her sponsor.
