The boy, A.S., a Grade 11 student of an Indian school in Dubai, was ‘upset’ about his poor performance in the first exam held a few days ago.

A 16-year-old Indian boy committed suicide on the day of his exam, shocking the school fraternity and community members who knew him as an artistically talented boy.

The boy, A.S., a Grade 11 student of an Indian school in Dubai, was ‘upset’ about his poor performance in the first exam held a few days ago, according to those who knew him.

His body was found hanging from the terrace of his apartment building in Sharjah on Sunday afternoon, a couple of hours after he had left home on the pretext of going to school to sit for the second exam.

His parents, who assumed that he had left for school, were unaware the boy was missing till the school informed them that he did not turn up for the exam. Following this, they filed a missing complaint with the Sharjah Police.

A police source said a tenant of the adjacent building informed the police that the boy’s body was hanging from the terrace of the building on which the family lived. The parents where still at the police station while the shocking news was relayed to them.

The case was then referred to the investigation sections officer who interrogated the parents of the boy, who said their son was upset as he didn’t do well in the previous exam.

The source added that the police did not find any criminal motive in the case and considered it a case of suicide. The body of the boy was released on Monday.

Several community members visited the Medical Fitness Centre at Mushaisnah when the body was taken there for embalming on Monday evening. Many remembered A.S. as an artistically talented boy, just like his father who himself is an artist and sculpturer.

“It is a big tragedy for the family and for all who know them …The members of our neighbourhood association are shocked. We remember A.S. as a smart kid who supported his father when he held a clay-modelling and sculpture-making workshop for our children when he was just 14 years old,” said Basheer K.A, whose sculpture was made by A.S.’s father at the venue.

The boy’s body will be flown to his family’s home town in the south Indian state of Kerala early on Tuesday morning.
