The Sharjah Police have confirmed the death of a 24-year-old Indian construction worker, who fell to his death while working on the eighth floor of a building. The young man was working in a building which is still under construction in Al Mamzar area next to the Sharjah Islamic Bank.

The accident took place on Sunday afternoon at around 2.30pm, following which the engineers notified the police. A team of police officers rushed to the site to investigate, a police spokesperson said.

The police also got orders from the Public Prosecutor to carry the body to the Emirates Forensic Laboratory for investigations.

Police urged engineers and construction workers to ensure that all safety procedures are in place at their work sites in order to avoid similar accidents.

Lapses in the safety regulations is a major offence and punishable by UAE laws, the spokesperson said.

Work-related accidents on construction sites are common in the emirate. Though some cases are blamed on suicide bids, many are caused by safety lapses on these sites. The emirate’s municipality is responsible for making inspections on all work sites to ensure the safety of workers.
