Reports on UAE human rights

Statement says the UAE has been subjected to unfair, smear media campaigns aimed at casting severe doubt on its humanitarian role and the care given to human rights within the UAE and abroad.

The Emirates Human Rights Association (EHRA) said on Tuesday that recent reports by some international organisations on the human rights record of the UAE were “inaccurate and lacked corroboration.”

“From time to time, the UAE has been subjected to unfair, smear media campaigns aimed at casting severe doubt on its humanitarian role and the care given to human rights within the UAE and abroad and its confident steps to develop and update legislations and laws regarding the provision of justice and social security to both Emiratis and expatriate residents without exception,” an EHRA statement said.

The statement described as “preposterous” recent reports from these organisations about verdicts issued by the UAE judiciary against a group of suspects found guilty of criminal acts punishable by the UAE law and international laws. In that respect, the statement said, EHRA members had been closely monitoring these hearings at the Federal Supreme Court and had not observed any inaccuracies and flaws by judges or prosecutors.

The judge, the statement added, had allowed the accused to select lawyers to represent and defend them.

In these hearings, the statement said, justice had taken its natural course without any pressure from any parties. The EHRA suggested that these organisations should avoid meaningless speeches, adding that it was ready to have a dialogue with them at its headquarters or at any place they might suggest.

The EHRA said it had no connection with foreign websites that were critical of the UAE, issuing messages on Twitter and through other media.
