Al Ali: Moderate to heavy rain hit different areas in Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah on Monday afternoon.

The rain, accompanied by thunder and strong winds, flooded streets in low-lying areas and roads passing through mountains, causing momentary traffic jams.

There were reports of stones falling on some mountain roads but no accidents were reported.

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said heavy rain lashed the area around Fujairah Airport and towns and villages elsewhere in the emirates, with around seven millimetres reported.

Ghulam Qadir, a grocer in Khor Fakkan, said black clouds developed suddenly around midday and were followed by heavy rain and strong winds. People living in Ras Al Khaimah also reported moderate to heavy rain.

The NCMS had issued a weather alert on Monday warning people of rain, thunderstorms and strong winds in the upper northern and eastern emirates. Winds also kicked up dust and sand in Umm Al Quwain, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and other coastal areas.

Winds also made the sea rough and the centre reported some four- to seven-foot high waves in the Arabian Gulf.

According to the NCMS, the next 24 hours will be partly cloudy, becoming hazy at time. The amount of cloud will increase over some areas, especially in the northern and eastern emirates, with a chance of rain. The daytime temperature will continue to fall and there is also the chance of fog
