A 21-year-old student has been sentenced to six months in jail for assaulting a delivery boy and setting his bike on fire.

The student, an Emirati is accused of punching the delivery boy, a Bangladeshi man, several times after pulling the latter off his bike in Al Qusais area.

The accused was found guilty by the Court of First Instance of arson and physical assault charges. The court ordered him to pay a Dh3,000 fine. The incident allegedly happened on May 4.

The complainant, a 34-year-old Bangladeshi delivery boy, said during the prosecution investigation that he was about to drop a parcel at a house in Oud Al Muttaina area around 11.30am when the accused stopped him.

“He grabbed me by the shirt and pulled me off my bike. I fell down. He punched me several times in the face for no reason and then took the ignition key”.

The defendant allegedly told the man to give him all the money he had. “I somehow managed to break free from his hands and ran to hide behind a tree”.

The complainant then saw the accused throwing a burning match stick inside the bike’s fuel tank. The defendant fled the scene after he set the bike on fire. A police corporal quoted the accused as alleging that he assaulted the victim after the latter tried to bump into his vehicle.

The corporal also quoted the defendant as admitting to have set the bike on fire.

The student was taken into police custody.

Another police corporal quoted the defendant as admitting to have burned the bike. “The student claimed the delivery boy tried to overtake him and perform some stunts in a bid to show off and that irritated him,” the corporal told the prosecutor.

The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days.
