Dubai – An Emirati youth has been fined Dh500,000 as compensation for the damages he caused to public property due to speeding, reckless driving and stunt driving. The financial losses resulting from the motorist’s antics were calculated by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority.

Major-General Khamis Matar Al Mazeina, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, said: “This kind of behaviour is unacceptable. We live in a civilised country and the government has shelled out a lot of money to put in place a robust road infrastructure that ensures traffic safety.”

Colonel Safi Mohair Al Mazroui, Director of the General Department of Traffic, said residents of an area notified them that the motorist was driving recklessly. The police put the 20-year-old under surveillance and found that he was performing stunts while driving. He was found drifting his car — a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels or all tyres — which caused damage to public property.

On being summoned, the youth confessed to driving recklessly. He also uploaded a video of his stunt driving on social media platforms. The motorist has paid the Dh500,000 fine he was slapped with.
