Mumbai: Priyanka Chopra may be a veritable superstar in her native India—she’s an actress and singer and won the Miss World title in 2000—but unless you’re a Bollywood aficionado, you may not have heard of her…until now. Chopra is Guess’s newest campaign girl—and her photos will grace the pages of countless magazines this winter.

“I’m their first brown model,” she told WWD. “Guess pictures are so iconic. They show women as beautiful, feminine, powerful, and yet candid. But being the next Guess girl was something that I would have never thought of, but when I met Paul [Marciano, cofounder of Guess], he was like, ‘You’re it. It has to be you.’”

Photographed by singer Bryan Adams, the ad campaign promises to be classic super glam and retro-inspired—Guess’s signature style.

“The vibe was like a young Sophia Loren,” Chopra explained. “I wanted to play characters, and I wanted to be in the mood. I wanted every picture to speak of a story.”

This isn’t the only trailblazing first for Chopra. Last summer, she became the first Bollywood star to be signed to CAA, a powerhouse talent agency in Los Angeles that also represents stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston, and Mariah Carey. She’s also authored newspaper columns in various national papers and last year used her platform in The Times of India to speak out against violence against women. In fact, she’s been a longtime advocate of women’s rights and has campaigned, for years, against female infanticide—she’s even worked with UNICEF since 2008.
