Mumbai: Shahid Kapoor’s Phata Poster Nikhla Hero marks the romantic hero’s foray into full-fledged comedy. Returning to the silver screen after a break, Shahid has put his last few box-office disappointments behind him, and is all charged up and raring to go.
Indiatimes.com caught up with Shahid Kapoor to find out more about the way forward and how he molded himself for Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani fame Raj Kumar Santoshi’s style of comedy.
Shahid says he stands by all his decisions and his films, regardless of their final outcome. But going forward he is looking at working with filmmakers he can completely submit himself to.
Shahid says he has understood the importance of investing in people over paper as the team one works with is going to convert the words in the script into a movie. “You have to make an effort…Not a forced one, but it is important that people who are working together are on the same page while making a film”.
Shahid says he “blindly” followed Raj Kumar Santoshi in Phata Poster Nikhla Hero.
“Yaar Yeh Genre Hi Naya Hai Mere Liye…This is a completely new zone for me. I have never done an out and out entertainer and such a Masaledaar role before. Here I am saying lines like Pyaaz Ke Chilko and doing a full Tapori song like Agal Bagal. Even the whole color palette is so bright and in-your-face. So the biggest challenge for me was to adapt myself to a genre I had never done before”.
Shahid adds that Raj Kumar Santoshi helped him loosen up as an actor. “Since Raj Ji is such a good performer himself, he opened me up as an actor and allowed me to go out and just have fun. You can say, during the course of this film Mere Saare Screw Jo Tight Thay, Raj Ji Ne Who Loose Kar Diye”.
Shahid says that whenever he would ask his director for a brief on a scene or song to be shot the next day, Santoshi would simply smile and say, “Set Pe Aao”.
“Comedy needs to be spontaneous and he has allowed me to do so”.
On the trade perception that PPNH is like a new beginning for the actor, and the arrival of Shahid 2.0, he says, “If people are saying it happily I am fine…No issues”.
Matching steps with Shahid in this film is Barfi fame Ileana.
He says, “Ileana fit into this movie quite easily as she has done a lot of full on enetertainers in this space down South. I didn’t know much about her work, so when I was told she is my heroine, I Googled her name, and I was like “Arre Waah Yeh Toh Kaafi Cool Hai”…(Laughs)…She has done some fun stuff in South movies”.
Speaking on his last two films, Shahid argues that an actor’s journey is a lot like what happens in cricket!
“When you are in form, everything goes in your favor and when you are out of form, the same actions may work against you. But you should never change your game. At the same time an actor should never get bogged down by results, or analyze his own work during the making of a film. Because from the scripting stage to its release, a lot of factors are involved in the making of a film and it is a long process. So an actor must bring positivity to the sets and enjoy his work, because sometimes that positive energy can even make up for the flaws in a film”.
After Phata Poster Nikhla Hero, Shahid will be seen in the forthcoming ventures of Prabhu Deva and Vishal Bhardwaj.
