New Delhi: Sonakshi Sinha has just set a hat-trick record. For three years in a row, the Dabangg girl has won the Worst Actor (female) at the Golden Kela Awards. This year she won the quirky award for Action Jackson. Joining her were other big bill stars, like Arjun Kapoor, who won the Worst Actor (male) for Gunday and Prabhu Deva, who jiggled his way into the Worst Director title with his latest caper Action Jackson. Unsurprisingly, Humshakals was the undisputed winner in the Worst Film category.
The Golden Kela Awards is in its seventh year now. Behind the tongue-in-cheek outlook lies a honest drive to make the Hindi Film Industry realise that they can do away with doltish releases like Humshakals, Gunday, the Singham series and many others. Anant Singh, creative head behind the awards calls the Golden Kela Bollywood’s most honest, but least prestigious awards. “We keep on doing this hoping that maybe someday Bollywood will stop making such movies,” says Singh, who also hosted the awards. However, he adds, “Until the day comes, we will follow the Bolly trend and keep on doing sequels of the awards each year.”
The awards rewarded, or ridiculed, the so-called commercial success stories of tinsel town like Tiger Shroff and Yo Yo Honey Singh. While the former won the Worst Debut of the year, the controversial rapper, who is back from his rehab with another hit-to-be ‘Birthday Bash’, won the Bas Kijiye Bahut Ho Gaya Award. Singh calls it their version of lifetime achievement awards. “With this award, we try to say that we have had enough of you, so quit it.” Yo yo’s superhit Blue Hai Paani Paani from Yaariyan won the Most Irritating Song Award.
Among others in special category is the Why Are You Still Trying Award. Sonam Kapoor won the trophy deservingly, for ‘torturing audiences with her plastic presence on movies’. The Fanaa Award for Most Pointlessly Controversial Film went to Aamir Khan’s PK.
Priyanka Chopra, who did a commendable job as Mary Kom, couldn’t quite nail the accent. Especially striking was her ‘Kisiko itna bhi mat darao’ dialogue, where she completely forgot to use whatever north eastern accent she could muster throughout the film. The Dara Singh Award for the Worst Accent, thus, had her name written all over it.
“This year we saw some great creativity on Horror movie names, with films like Darr @ The Mall and Mumbai 125 Km 3D. However, when we heard there is a movie in this genre titled 6-5=2, we knew we had to confer the Khooni Dracula Award for Most Creatively Named Horror Film to this great creative feat,” says Singh.
Although none of the above mentioned actors were present at the event, Abhishek Sharma, who once delivered the critically acclaimed Tere Bin Laden, did turn up to receive the prestigious Bawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke Award for The Shaukeens. Said Sharma, “I am extremely excited to win the Baanwra Award, as Golden Kela Awards are the only awards worth winning in this industry that celebrates mediocrity like no other film industry in the world.”
Abhishek Sharma’s award acceptance speech, it was the only one of the evening, touched a serious note when he said, “These awards are a hard hitting reminder of how mediocre we have really become. Even the name Bollywood is an uninspired knockoff of Hollywood. Cinemas are the antithesis of your evening news. If you are depressed with the corruption, murder, rape, soaring petrol prices and Modi suits, you can simply escape from it all by going to the movies.”
The most shocking moment of the evening came when Sharma said he is “done with bollywood”, and that he would be going on a break after his 2015 releases, which includes the highly anticipated sequel to Tere Bin Laden. He said, “Bollywood is not making films anymore, they are just making ‘projects’. I will done with bollywood after my 2015 commitments are dealt with.” Sharma was tightlipped on his future beyond the Hindi Film Industry.
This was the last year for Delhi to host the Golden Kela Awards, as Singh said that from the next year, the awards will be held in Mumbai.
