Even Akon races ahead of Justin Bieber, who performed in Dubai earlier this month

The bad press garnered by Justin Bieber’s antics during his short stint in Dubai cannot be blamed for the tween superstar’s rankings in the top 10 celebrities in the UAE as per local Facebook traffic.

The users have spoken and have placed Latino hip-shaking Shakira as the number one celebrity, as per the rankings released by social media analytical platform, SocialBakers.

The rankings, which were determined by user traffic from the 3.4 million Facebook users in the UAE, saw the new mother garner over 290,000 local fans from the 64.6m her official page has drawn on the social media platform.

Closing in at second place, which may prove a surprise to many, is Akon, who also stepped up on a stage in Dubai earlier this month as an unannounced act paired with renowned DJ, David Guetta.

The RnB singer, who has also flirted with Bollywood two years ago with his breakthrough track ‘Chammak Challo’ for Shah Rukh Khan’s sci-fi film ‘Ra.One’, bagged over 260,000 local fans from the 47.2m likes his Facebook page has drawn.

Rounding up the top five slot is Michael Jackson at number three (207,406 local; 59m global), Indian music composer and Oscar winner AR Rahman (198,358; 11.6m) and UAE favourite, Enrique Iglesias (176,050; 31.2m).

If you are wondering where Bieber ranks, it’s at the number six position with nearly 176,000 local fans out of the 53.3m global Facebook followers. But fans can at least be consoled by the fact that his global rankings does place the 19-year-old in the top three, right behind Shakira and Michael Jackson; that counts for something.

Below Bieber fever is yet another tween star, Taylor Swift (139,080), at number seven, followed by Bollywood playback singer Shreya Ghosal (137,000), who will also be performing in Sharjah this weekend.

Rounding up the top 10 is Usher (126,247), followed by Lil Wayne (124,177).

Surprisingly, no Arab artiste features in the top 10 celebrity rankings in the UAE.
