Punjab CopCHANDIGARH: An assistant sub-inspector of Punjab Police was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Delhi-Jalandhar highway late on Sunday. According to reports, ASI Gurdev Sigh was shot as he signalled a car to stop on the highway. Singh was in night patrolling duty when the incident took place.

This is not the first time that a police personnel has been fatally attacked in Punjab. Last week, a Punjab Police officer on traffic duty during a VIP visit was allegedly assaulted by a truck driver. He later succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.

Assistant sub inspector (ASI) Ravinder Pal Singh Mangat had signalled a truck to stop at the campus being constructed for the Rajiv Gandhi National Law University in Patiala. However, the truck driver did not stop. Mangat chased down the truck and stopped it, but was allegedly assaulted by the driver.

In December last year, an ASI lost his life after he was shot dead while trying to stop a ruling Akali Dal leader from harassing his daughter near Amritsar.
