The case was brought to light when the accused Salman Ali Raza, a resident of Kurla, filed a missing person’s complaint on March 24 alleging that his wife Parveen Salman Ali Raza had gone missing. Chunabhatti police officials began their investigations and started questioning neighbours and locals about the victim.
“After the missing complaint was registered, we began investigations. It was during investigations that we realised that there was something amiss in Salman’s statement after which he was considered the prime suspect. After much digging, he revealed the truth,” said an officer from the Chunabhatti police station.
Investigations revealed that Salman killed Parveen on March 21 and then threw her body in the Mithi river near Bandra Kurla Complex, the officer added. “He wrapped her body in a sack, carried it on his bike and threw it in the Mithi.”
According to authorities, Salman murdered Parveen owing to jealousy and marital discord. When asked about the reason for murder, senior police inspector Damodar Rajaram Chaudhari from Chunabhatti police station said, “The victim would go out without informing Salman, which would irk him and they would fight on a regular basis.
He also doubted her character and would keep fighting about it. Additionally, on the day of the murder, the couple had a fight.” The officer added, “We learnt that cases of robbery were registered against the accused in four different police stations.”
The accused has been booked under sections 210 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) and 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Police have also arrested one Saleem Qureshi for being Salman’s accomplice in the crime and booked him under the same sections.
