BHUBANESWAR: An NRI, staying in Canada, on Friday alleged that he was manhandled by a priest at Jagannath temple in Puri after he refused to pay him ‘dakshina’.

Gourendra Nath Sanyal, a senior bridge engineer at Ontario, lodged a complaint at the Puri sub-collector’s office. He, however, did not bring the matter to the notice of police. “I along with my wife was having darshan inside the temple when a priest beat me up after I ignored his demand,” Sanyal told mediapersons.

“We asked him whether he wanted to lodge complaint against the priest. But he refused. He said he wants the district administration to train the priests on basic etiquettes,” said DSP (City) Sasibhusan Satpathy.
