Mumbai: Bombay High Court stays ban on sale of meat on September 17 and has refused to interfere with ban on slaughter of animals on that day.

“Though state govt circular banning meat sale on two days was issued in 2004, it was never implemented fully,” the bench observed.

The meat sale ban during Paryushan has been around since 1964. Till 2013 the ban on meat sale during Paryushan was restricted to two days. Last year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation increased it to four days.

Earlier last week, the Bombay High Court said the four-day ban on sale of meat in Mumbai was “not feasible” and sought a response from the state and the BMC on a petition challenging the ban.

A bench headed by Justice Anoop Mohta said, “Mumbai is a metropolitan city. A straight ban on meat cannot be a formula. Ban is on slaughter and sale of the meat. What about other sources? What about packaged meat that is already available in the market?”

The court had suggested that if the Jain community had a problem with animals being slaughtered in the open and displayed in shops, a direction could be issued against it.
