MUMBAI: BJP spokesperson Madhu Chavan was accused of rape by a 50-year-old pathologist in a complaint lodged at the Kalachowki police station on Tuesday night.
The complainant, who fought the last election on a BJP ticket, claimed Chavan (65) had been raping her over the past 20 years after promising to marry her. A case of rape, cheating and making false marriage promises was registered against Chavan.
“Action will be taken against Chavan after completing the probe,” DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni said. “We will record Chavan’s statement.”
Chavan told the electronic news media that the allegation was a political stunt to malign his name. The senior leader was not separately available for comment; his mobile was switched off.
The woman’s complaint said Chavan had been promising to divorce his wife and marry her since 1993. She claimed they had even tied the knot at a temple.
“The woman claimed Chavan raped her at her Lalbaug home for years,” inspector S A Jain of the Kalachowki police station said.
