A woman had accused him of assaulting her after she refused to pay excess fare

The Ashok Nagar police on Friday arrested Rajanna (40), the autorickshaw driver who allegedly assaulted a 22-year-old woman and even clicked her photographs. He lives on Magadi Road.

The police, who had only booked a non-cognizable offence against the auto driver on Wednesday, filed cases under Section 354 (assault and outraging the modesty of a woman), Section 506 (criminal intimidation) and Section 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman).

Rajanna will be produced before a magistrate on Saturday, sources in the police said. His autorickshaw, bearing registration number KA-02-AD-450, has been seized. Ashok Nagar traffic police station will also book a case for demanding excess fare. The complainant said that she has received overwhelming support after publishing her story on a social networking site.

Rating system
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) B. Dayanand said there are multiple channels for people to complain about errant auto drivers. “We are encouraging people to register their complaints. But not all of them are bad. We want to reward the good ones. That is why we have started a rating system,” he said.

About the problem of autorickshaws operating without permits, which he pegged at around 30 per cent of the over one lakh autos on the roads, he said, “We want to weed them out and are providing stickers to autos which submit all their documents for inspection.”
